This is a specialised treatment that can help those who have had an injury to the brain or spinal cord which has affected the ability to use certain muscles. A common example is foot drop. FES is a small device which can be attached to the surface of the skin. It provides a small electrical current to the nerve pathway which has been interrupted to stimulate the contraction of the muscle. FES is mainly used for foot drop to assist with the gait cycle (walking). This can help to reduce energy expenditure, reduce risk of falls, improve confidence and restore normal biomechanics.
